The Most Visible of Indian Cultural in Partition’s Movie
Introduction
Sociology of literature, a branch of literary study that
examines the relationships between literary works and their social contexts,
including patterns of literacy, kinds of audience, modes of publication and
dramatic presentation, and the social class positions of authors and readers.
Partition is a 2007 film directed by Vic
Sarin, written by Patricia Finn and Vic
Sarin, and starring Jimi
Mistry and Kristin
Kreuk. The film is set
in 1947, based on the partition of India and was partially shot in Kamloops, B.C.,
Canada, standing in for India.
The writer conclude
that the definition of sociology of literature is the study of the relationship
between literary and sociology, including sociology of the society, sociology
of the author and the sociology of the reader.
The writer is going to
analyze partition’s movie based on the sociology of literature, especially
based on culture of Indian. The writer takes sociology of literature to analyze
partition’s movies especially in the Indian cultural because partition’s movie
shows many cultural of people in India. Cultural is one of the aspects in the
sociology of literature, the writers want to know the most visible of Indian
cultural in the partition movie.
Based on the background study, the writer formulates
the following problem is “what does the most visible of
Indian cultural based on Partition’s movie?”.
Analysis
and Discussion
In
1947, India got a
freedom to escape from British rule.
To avoid a civil
conflict, India is
divided into two parts, which are
placed Islam in Pakistan and
the rest in India. Partition is a movie
inspired by the partition
which occurred in India. This
movie tells about people who also live in India and they
have cultural aspects like traditions, food, people's lives, and religion.
First,
wearing traditional clothing is one of the traditions in India. In this movie Gian's mother and her neighbors
dressed in the form of a draped fabric and it is called
Sari. While the men
wear “Kurta”, it likes pajamas, then trousers,
shirt and wearing
a turban on the head like that worn by Gian and Avtar. So, the cultural of
wearing traditional clothes in India is seen as a strong culture
within the movie.
Second,
rice and foods which flavored by spices
are the characteristic of food in India. In Partition movie we can see when Gian came to the
market to buy rice, there are a lot of spices
are sold in those markets. Rice and wheat are the staple food in India,
while the use of spices
in cooking is characteristic
of India. In partition’s
movie, staple foods or special food sometime shown but not too prominent.
Third,
India always celebrated the holidays, many
holidays which Indian have. Holi is one holiday
in India, where people
dancing with the accompanied by music
and they were throwing
colored powder or
colored water as
did Nasheem and others. In the partition’s movie, people of Sikhs
celebrated Holi, can
be seen clearly when Nasheem
and her friend dancing with color powder scattered.
So, culture of festivals
is extremely visible in
partition’s movie although it only once.
Fourth,
people's lives in India generally work as a farmer, breeder. They greatly appreciate the traditions
that they have
such as wearing traditional
clothes, celebrating the holiday
and their religion. Their trust of ancestor was still strong that their
hostility still exists, for
example Sikhs were at enmity with Islam in Pakistan and they killed each others. In Partition movie, commonly people
in India also worked as farmers, breeders, and s. So it can be said
that the livelihoods of India in partition
movie was evident.
Sikhism
is one of the religions which believed by
Indians but the majority of the Indian’s
religion are Hindu. Hostility
between Sikhs in
India and Muslim
in Pakistan is an ancestral tradition. In
partition’s movie, people like
Nasheem was Muslim, her neighbors and her
father was killed by Sikhs people
when they have a trip, the opposite is Sikhs were
killed in the train after they came from Pakistan. Gian,
his mother and his neighbors are Sikhs;
they do not like
it if there are Muslims who
lived in Sikh (as a result of hostilities ancestors). Instead of Muslims in
Pakistan do not like it if there are Sikhs who
lived there, when Gian want to go to
Pakistan, he should change
his religion to Islam,
so Gian moved to
be Muslim. Even, when Nasheem live in the
middle of a Sikh she also almost
killed, the grudge between Sikhs and Muslim in
India is very visible
in the partition’s movie, even it
is the most prominent. Love story
between Nasheem and Gian was apart
because Nasheem’s family did not
like the Sikhs, it was conflict
which resulted of hostilities ancestors.
So it can be said that the most prominent
of culture or tradition in India based on partition’s movie is hostility between Indian
Sikhs and Muslim
in Pakistan.
Conclusion
Based on the analysis and discussion of the author in
partition’s movie, it can be seen that culture in India still very strong. The culture
and tradition have a high regard in that State. In partition’s movie it was
seen that the culture of Indian is very prominent, as the evidence in
partition’s movie that is people who use traditional clothes such as "Sari"
and “Kurta”, the staple food and their special foodwhich cooked with spices, then
most of people who work as farmer, breeders, then
the enmity between Sikhs and the culture of Muslim is the most prominent in partition’s
movie because it is a tradition of their ancestors that very strong and many
conflict which happenede caused of their
enmity. So, it can be concluded that the culture or traditions which are very prominent
in India based on partition’s movie is the enmity between Sikhs in India and Muslim
in Pakistan.
